Sharing stories from their vast experiences, Patti and Rob will talk to us about:

  • the benefits of having an agent
  •  how to get an agent’s attention and keep yourself off of the slush pile
  • the importance of investing time in the proposal and query letter
  • the value of investing in an editor before submission
  • tips about what’s not selling in Canada today.

Bring your questions for a short Q & A period.

There will be tickets available at the door.

Bio: Rob Firing

Rob Firing was a publicist for more than 20 years—15 of those at HarperCollins Canada as their Senior Director of Publicity, Communications and Speakers’ Bureau—before he moved to Transatlantic Agency, where he is now a partner, as a literary agent and speakers’ agent. Rob has worked closely with everyone from JK Rowling to Tom Wolfe, from Margaret Trudeau to Margaret Drabble — literally hundreds of writers across many genres. He has won awards for his work from the Canadian Marketing Association and other marketing and PR organizations. He is also the co-author of The Everyday Squash Cook (HarperCollins, 2014), and the author of Steak Revolution (HarperCollins, 2018), which was a Gourmand World Cookbook Award finalist. Rob represents nonfiction, especially narrative nonfiction and sometimes memoir (and cookbooks!).

Bio: Patti M. Hall

Patti M Hall is an author,  sought-after writing coach, book proposal specialist and publishing strategist. She is the creator of The Story House, an exclusive non-fiction mastermind and the author of the memoir, Loving Large (Dundurn, 2020).  Patti has been the secret and not-so-secret weapon behind a hundred books, working with authors to navigate both traditional and alternative publishing.
