Poetry Workshop: Secrets of Creativity in Life and Art

Patricia Keeney,  an award-winning poet, novelist, theatre and literary critic and professor of Literature, Humanities and Creative Writing at Toronto’s York University will be facilitating this special two-hour workshop in Newmarket.

Do you want to explore “the inside story” that will help you to deepen your connection with your writing and your readers?  Whether or not poetry is your usual genre, all writers can benefit from exploring the poem as an emotional roadmap, otherwise known as the inside story.

The differences between us both connect us and make us unique.  Poetry has a special way of exploring that individuality as it unfolds in heightened moments that often involve change in some way.  Patricia regards the poem as a sort of emotional literacy.  Through poetry, writers can decode the secret self.

Patricia will start by sharing some of her poems on the theme of change.  She will lead us in an exercise of free-association around questions or intensities of feeling, exploring words and images that emerge for us.  Participants will have the opportunity to share the poetry they write in the workshop.

Patricia will follow up after the workshop with online feedback of one poem (complete or in process) from each participant.”
