SUMMARY:Inside the Character's Mind: Mastering First- and Third-Person Limited Point of View
DESCRIPTION:Writing in either first person or third person limited point of view allows authors to create a strong emotional connection between the reader and the character. Both points of view offer direct access to the narrator’s inner thoughts\, feelings\, and biases\, often resulting in a more intimate and subjective experience. Both perspectives require careful attention to consistency\, depth of character\, and sensory filtering to avoid slipping into an omniscient or distant tone. \nIn this workshop\, writers will explore the craft of writing in first-person and third-person limited points of view\, helping writers develop stronger character perspectives and emotional depth. Through a mix of discussion and practical writing exercises\, participants will learn how to maintain consistency within a chosen POV\, deepen character perspective\, develop narrative voice\, and craft scenes that draw readers closer to your character’s inner world. Whether you’re new to these perspectives or looking to refine your technique\, this session offers tools and strategies to sharpen your narrative voice and elevate your storytelling. \nPlease visit the RHPL website’s calendar to register.

SUMMARY:Writing on the Topic of Death
DESCRIPTION:We will write a few short pieces from our unique perspectives using prompts that resonate with us. We will reflect on our feelings\, memories and experiences. Please note that these are not counselling or support group sessions\, although you may find support in sharing with the group. These are intended to be on-camera sessions so that that we can engage while sharing our stories.  All participants will make a commitment to keeping confidential anything we hear during the session in order to create a safe space. We will treat each piece of writing as fiction. We encourage you to share some of your writing with the group\, but you always have the option of passing.  We will hear our various perspectives with compassion and without fear of judgment. \nLois Hayes \nLois has been a writing group member and facilitator using the Amherst Writers and Artists (AWA) method for almost twenty years.  She is passionate about facilitating workshops using the AWA method for individuals as well as groups\, including seniors\, adoption-focused\, and women’s retreats.  As a hospice volunteer\, she facilitates four Death Cafes a year and provides workshops for hospice clients\, volunteers and staff\, focusing on grief and bereavement\, caregivers\, and legacy writing.  Lois was adopted at ten days old and reunited with her birth family as an adult.  She has been involved with her local Parent Finders Search & Support Group for the past 30 years. \nAllison Hannah \nAllison Hannah is a certified Amherst Writers and Artists (A.W.A.) Facilitator who retired in 2024 from a career in the world of foster care and adoption. Writing to prompts with others helps her to mine for stories. She recently published a memoir\, With and Without You: Finding my Mom on the Page. She sees that time spent writing is never wasted and enjoys introducing others to all that can be derived from finding their voices using the A.W.A. writing method. She is a member of the Writers’ Community of York Region. \nSession length: 2 hours with one short break. \n Cost: $20 Canadian for one session. $15 for each additional session in the winter series. \n To register and pay for the session(s) via e-transfer: email allisonhannah073@gmail.com \nCredit cards are not accepted at this time. SUMMARY:A Marketing Cheatsheet to Growing Your Social Media Following
DESCRIPTION:While raising the number of social media followers isn’t a magic formula for selling books or gaining traction with agents and publishers\, it is a trust signal to the people buying your books that you are a ‘in real life’ person whom they can relate to. \nI managed to grow my social media following on three platforms from fifty to over a thousand in a matter of months\, but my novel isn’t out yet. How did I do this? \nI’ll explore methods for increasing your reach on BlueSky\, Threads\, and Instagram. The techniques are also effective for other platforms. \nTopics covered \n\nWhy is it necessary to have a social media following\nExamples of authors with successful followings\nWhat should you be selling as an author\nDemystifying the author brand\nWho is your target audience\nHow do you match your effort to your strengths\nWhen to diversify your reach\nWhat to do while waiting for results\n\nBiography \nI’m an author who has moonlighted as a product leader for over a decade. During that time\, I’ve helped sell million-dollar SaaS products through community building\, podcasting\, and thought leadership blogs. I’m in the early stages of my author journey\, but I would love to share what I’ve learned. I am the host of the podcast Myths & Samsara\, and I am on submission with my first novel while writing the second. \nReserve your spot today.

SUMMARY:7 Stories
DESCRIPTION:7 Stories is a writing competition inspired by art. Each year\, seven artworks are selected from the Gallery’s collection. Writers are invited to spend time with these pieces — to notice what stirs\, unsettles\, comforts\, surprises\, or lingers — and respond with an original story. Your story can be funny\, quiet\, haunting\, reflective\, hopeful\, or unexpected.
There is no perfect response. Whatever the artwork evokes in you is the right answer. \nVisit the Art Gallery of Georgina’s 7 Stories webpage for more information\, submission guidelines\, and how to enter.

SUMMARY:Clarence Chong a Retrospective: "Painted Girls - Imagined Histories"
DESCRIPTION:Clarence Chong\, maternal grandfather to Erika MacNeil\, arrived in Canada with an unknown birthdate and lineage. His grade school teacher\, known to MacNeil as Granny Abel\, recognized his talent and sent him to art school through a tunnel from Windsor to Detroit across the border when he came of age. \nThe works are a collection of portraits from Chong’s studies as an art student recently discovered in a tube portfolio in Erika MacNeil’s basement. Erika\, local Newmarket resident\, librarian at Rogers Public school\, who runs open mics\, a book club and writing workshops pays tribute to her grandfather\, Clarence; this exhibit celebrates the life and works of Clarence in recognition of MacNeil’s rich family history. \nArtists and poets will be in attendance to draw and write in response to the portraiture\, accompanied by live music. All welcome.
