Page to Stage: How to Engage an Audience and Speak into a Microphone at the Same Time with Charlene Jones

**This is a FREE Members-only workshop. Space is limited. Please reserve your spot below.

A significant number of writers create success and sales through reading their work aloud at various venues. Without needing to be trained actors, writers’ ability at the microphone, their capacity to vary pitch and tone, to engage an audience helps their career. Additionally, reading aloud provides an invaluable area of editing and response. Learn to overcome your fear of speaking in public with a variety of exercises from an experienced radio host.

This workshop provides experience in relaxation techniques especially for the mic, in throat opening and most importantly in learning to have fun while being in the spotlight through three major exercises.

1. Breath. Learning to breathe while reading requires relaxation and that too comes from breath. Exercises in making noise, allowing large sounds to come from your mouth while in a group of people helps everyone laugh and relax.

2. Eye contact. Learning to glance from page to audience, learning your material and having the confidence to look directly in the eyes of people opens their engagement level. Exercises in marking and remembering where to look up, what part of your text to emphasize increase confidence and ease at the microphone.

3. Embodying pleasure. Reading to each other well elicits a sense of pleasure in the body and increases confidence. Learning to make mistakes at the microphone, to roll with those moments and keep going, learning to trust the audience to be on your side changes the performer’s sense of what it means to be in the spotlight.

Workshop will be held on Thursday, January 31st, 2019, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at Newmakeit in Newmarket. Registration ends January 29th, 2019.

While performing with veteran Linda Stitt (co-host of Words and Music Salon in Toronto since 2008) from the early 1990’s to 1999 all across Ontario Charlene gained a rich trove of experience in being at the microphone.

As Professor for eight years at Sheridan College Charlene Jones learned more about the daily art of how to keep people engaged while trying to read, write, impart information. As a radio host of her own program on Whistle Radio from 2013 to 2015 she engaged readers and some guests with warm interview techniques. As podcast host of her website Soulsciences she continues to interview writers from around the globe. She has been in the spotlight and has created and coaxed others through the spotlight for over two decades.
