Pens ‘n Friends Peer Critiques Event

Let’s Get to the Nitty Gritty

By: Loni Cameron

The most recent WCYR event hosted a Lunch and Critique. As we arrived, we helped ourselves to a sandwich, some vegetables or fruit, and joined a table of like-minded individuals. It was a casual start to the day, with the conversations ranging from who-knew-who in each of the groups, to who were our most favourite and least favourite authors. With introductions made, desert taken, and laughs exchanged, we listened to a few words from Board Chair, MJ Moores and Special Events Coordinator, Doug Owen.

Then it was time to get to the nitty gritty. We broke up into groups of four, with a moderator for each group. Each person presented their comments on an excerpt of our writing, and we discussed each excerpt: our likes, and our suggested improvements. The author was given an opportunity to ask questions. This was an amazing opportunity for clarity, feedback, and discussion.

The Critique Luncheon was one of the most productive writing events I have attended with the WCYR. I was happy to have to opportunity to get such personalized feedback on my work from my peers. I benefitted from the different readers’ perspectives, their thoughts, and how they reacted to the content of the story. I think all the members in my group felt the same way. We had the time to take notes as individualized comments were provided. The best part of this process was that the critique was a conversation: the author was not “talked at”, but “spoken with”, given concrete examples to backup opinions and suggestions. I am so happy that I attended and will definitely participate again next year at the May 2019 Pens n’ Friends luncheon. Not only did I receive invaluable feedback and help with my work-in-progress, I feel that the other people in my group did as well.
