WCYR Youth (Currently Inactive due to COVID-19)

The Writers’ Community of York Region Youth Chapter

Write Now is the WCYR Youth Group whose mandate is to foster student writers in grades 7-12. All genres and interests are encouraged to attend, whether you are into fiction, slam poetry, scripting, blogging, zineing, or any combination thereof.

Each class is held at Cardinal Press Cafe at 208 Main St S, Newmarket ON L3Y 3Z3 in Newmarket from 12-1 pm on the 4th Sunday of each month, followed by an open mic event.

The forum is an opportunity for students to:

    • discuss books and writers who influence their writing
    • engage in individual and collaborative writing tasks based on a variety of prompts
  • receive and provide feedback about their own and others’ writing

Erika MacNeil, the group’s facilitator, is a teacher with YRDSB. As the school librarian, she has the distinct pleasure of influencing and reflecting on the reading choices of her students. A published author with over 20 years of experience teaching English, Erika is passionate about the written word, oral expression, and the mindful attention necessary to participate in meaningful conversation. She is an active member of the WCYR and specializes in collaborative and prompt-based writing.
