This course is an invitation to the writer in you, known or yet to be discovered. Claim your voice and hone your skills in a safe, creative environment. Explore what matters to you while writing poetry, prose, memoir, whatever genre you choose. All levels of experience are welcome. Using a variety of prompts, write spontaneously and see where the mind goes. Listen deeply, recognize what works in others’ writing, and give and receive supportive feedback. Everything will be treated as fiction and held in confidence, providing the opportunity to dive deeper. Mornings will be spent generating several pieces of fresh writing. Work will be taken further in the afternoons, with polished pieces being read to the group again at the end of the day

Whether you’re writing fiction or memoir, you will develop a strong foundation that supports your project from beginning to end. You will clarify the purpose of your book, identify your characters and what they want, and define the central conflict. Through guided exercises, map out key plot points, timeline, and genre, and explore who your ideal reader is and how to keep them engaged and turning pages. By the end of the day, leave with a complete blueprint for your book—one that gives you direction, confidence, and momentum to move from an initial idea to a finished manuscript.

Telling stories from life and memories, this creative writing course will focus on memoirs. Each day there will be discussions on different aspects of writing, including themes, how to structure memoirs, and engage readers. There will be daily time for writing your stories from memory or as elicited by prompts. Share some of your fresh writing with the class and give and receive feedback on what is strong and working in your writing. Develop your craft using writing exercises and prompts that will target specific writing skills.
