We sat down with D.M. De Alwis to discuss her writing journey, creative process, and what inspires her stories. Get an inside look at her experiences and learn valuable insights from a fellow writer in our community.
Which writers inspire you and why?
I’m nostalgic for the 90s-era female fantasy writers Katherine Kerr, Mercedes Lackey, and Andre Norton (among others), who broke ground with incredible world-building and relatable characters. In the modern era, I am inspired by authors who continue to break ground and write what they’re passionate about. Many are current and former members of the WCYR.
What is your favourite genre in which to write and why?
Historical fantasy fiction because it allows me to connect the dots between folklore and history and explore the anthropology and beliefs that led to the myths.
Do you have a current work in progress? Can you tell us a bit about it?
I am working on a series of novels take place from 10,000-500 BCE on the Indian subcontinent. The world-building is based on Buddhist cosmology, with much pulled from Indian and Sri Lankan mythology. I am also working on a middle-grade illustrated novella. My works generally involve a large slice of life and, sometimes, a demon or Yaksha.
